Memorial Day Ideas

Some of the things that we have in our Patriotic file that could be used throughout the year are included on our Memorial Day page.

Uncle Sam Headband Hat and Beard

The children had lots of fun making these hat and bear headbands.  We started with a tagboard sentence strip.  The white piece of construction paper was approximately  12 inches long.  The bottom of the white paper is 7 inches wide and it widens to almost 9 inches at the top.  The stripes are 12 inches x 1 1/4 inches.  We glued the stripes on the white paper and then stapled it to the headband.  Then the blue part of the hat was glue on top of the white.  We gave each child three stars to cut out for the hat.  The beard piece that goes around is 18 inches long and 1 1/4 wide.  The pieces attached to it were cut 12 x 1 1/4 inch.  We had the kids curl about 12-13 pieces  and we stapled them on the long strip.

Handprint-Pledge Poem

This idea could also be used for any patriotic holiday or unit.  We used it for Patriots Day in Sept.  We used tan colored paper to paint the little finger, ring finger and thumb red.  We painted the palm of the hand blue and then put dots of silver glitter glue for the stars.

The poem is:

With my hand on my heart,
That's how I start,
The Pledge of Allegiance, you see.

I say I'll be true
To the red, white and blue
And America, land of the free!

Ask me to recite the Pledge of Allegiance for you!

Patriotic Wreath

This is an idea that I read somewhere and I don't remember where I found it.  The wreath is made in the same way that we made the puzzle wreath for Christmas.  The puzzle pieces are painted prior to gluing them on the circular cardboard and a flag type ribbon is used for the top.     You could put a picture in the middle or just use it as a plain patriotic wreath.
