September Homework Ideas

This is a collection of ideas that can be used as homework activities or as individual skill practice in the classroom.  There are ideas for helping you set up a Homework Plan that can be used for each week throughout the school year.

Homework folder cover

You might like to start the school year off with a cute, home project.  This is an extra project that is included in the package.  For this project, each child receives a puzzle person to decorate.  When they return their "body," they all fit together---see below!  The decorated puzzle people make a great beginning of the year bulletin board, too.  The banner and two different puzzle patterns are provided in PDFs to copy and use for this project.  A letter to the parents with directions is also provided if you would like to use it to complete the project.  Everything is included to complete this project.

There are also four weeks of homework activities with at least five projects for each week.

A cover sheet (sample shown at left) for parents is provided with helpful hints and more detailed directions with each week's homework package.  These cover sheets are formatted for you to be able to edit and change to fit the needs of your students.  You can add or delete what you would like for each week.  In addition to the four weekly homework packages, there is the above home project.  This can be included as one of the week's homework activities or done in place of one week's homework.

Some of the activities for September homework include:  phonics, handwriting practice, story writing, building literacy skills, and other fun things for parents to do with their child.  Also included are math skills such as patterning, sorting,  writing numbers, and counting.   Below are samples of some of the activities that are included in the September Homework Ideas package.

"Investigating My Name?"   This is a fun activity using the book "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes.  The worksheet asks your child to find out why his/her parents chose their name.  It's always fun to learn a bit more about your students!

There is also a flannel board set to go along with "Chrysanthemum"

Below are low resolution samples of some of the projects for September.  The PDFs you will receive are full resolution and will print clearly.

A Homework letter to parents to explain and stress the importance of homework with lots of helpful hints to start the year off!
