Winter Ideas

Hanging Snowflakes (click on pictures to enlarge)

These snowflakes are made using four identical snowflakes with the following colors:  light blue, white, light blue and last dark blue.  They are stacked on top of each other and folded vertically in the middle.  Staple in at least four places on the vertical fold.  Then open the fold out to make the snowflake 3 dimensional.  Attach a string or piece of yarn to hang.

This project was done in two steps.  We used a 9x12 piece of dark blue construction paper for the background.  We used small pieces of a sponge to dab white (thick) tempera paint for the snow.  The tree was traced on black paper and each child cut out the tree and glued to the background.

Snowflake Tree

This idea was given to me by Paige Brown from Fairfield, California.  It is made with flaky, instant mashed potato flakes (DRY!)  It is a bit messy to make, but the snow almost looks real!

This idea was given to me by Kerry from British Columbia. It is a bit tricky to explain, but hopefully the picture will help!  We used a 12x18 piece of construction paper to make this little "booklet." Click on the photo enlarge.

First, you fold the light blue paper in half (like a hot dog.)  Lay the folded paper so that the fold is at the top and open at the bottom.  You will need to divide the top flap into five sections of 3 1/2 inches wide and the fold is 6 inches.  You cut five sections ONLY up to the fold!  I made five different snowmen, but you could use the same snowman for all five sections.  Students decorate each snowman hats and buttons according to the picture. We put sparkly, white glitter under each snowman.  A small yarn bow is glued to the neck of each snowman as follows.  (The first snowman has blue bow, blue hat and blue buttons and so on.)

1.  blue

2.  yellow

3.  red

4.  orange

5.  green

Click the next photo to enlarge the opened "book."    As you can see the little poem for each section is put on the top, inside flap.  The cotton ball with the small bow is glued  at the bottom of each section.

The poem is as cut apart and attached to the correct section.

(This one goes in the first section.)

Five little snowmen made of snow.

One had a hat and a big, blue bow.

Out came the sun and shone all day.

Till one little snowman melted away!

(This one goes in the second section.)

(fourth section)

Two little snowmen made of snow.

One had a hat and a big, red orange bow.

One little snowmen made of snow.

One had a hat and a big, green bow.

Out came the sun and shone all day

Till one little snowman melted away!

These are really cute when finished.  The kids love the flaps and reciting the poem.  Thanks, Kerry!

Winter Snowsuit or Eskimo

Each child was given a pattern of a snowsuit.  These were cut out and polyester batting was used for fur.  You could also use cotton balls that have been pulled apart.  A cupcake liner was used for the hood and a picture of each child was glued in the cent for the face.  These look really cute up on the bulletin board for a snow scene or you could use them for a unit on Eskimos.  Click to enlarge picture and pattern.
